A 29-year-old tricycle rider Ndubisi Obla, who allegedly hit a man and caused damage to a vehicle, on Monday appeared in Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on two charges.
Obla, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of reckless driving and without license, offences to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant drove his TVS Tricycle with registration number Lagos, EPE 447 QC in a reckless manner on Feb. 2, along Herbert Macaulay Road, Yaba, Lagos.
Olaluwoye claimed that Obla had driven his tricycle recklessly and hit the first complainant, Mr Nonso Okolo, who was waiting for a bus on the road.
She said Okolo was seriously injured and had to be taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
“My Lord, the defendant had also caused damage to a Toyota Corolla car with Registration number FKJ 212 CF, belonging to the second complainant, Mr Chuma Anyoagbunam,” she said.
She further told the court that Obla had driven his tricycle on the highway without a driver’s licence or rider’s card.
The offences contravene sections 7 (1), 18 (1) and 19 (1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos, 2012.Section 19 (1) stipulates a two-year prison term for reckless driving.
In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum.
Oghere said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case has been adjourned till May 8, for further hearing.
